I don't know why you are concerned with a dual layer drive. There is no media, and none is on the immediate horizon. So why bother (yes, you can buy blanks for $10.00 each. As I said, there is no media)

Subject: [Thinkpad] Where to find a dual-layer DVD+/-RW drive for T40?
IBM does not offer this. Does one exist that's a
direct fit? 2nd option: I recall someone on this list
adapting a brand x optical drive to a thinkpad, and
that some details must be just right or the machine is
damaged. Can't find that thread now.
Anyone familiar with this issue?
Slim dual-layer drives exist - Liteon sells one, but
it's unsupported, as noted on their site.
"DVD-RW Drive SOSW-852S
NOTE: This is a system integrator product. Due to
compatibility concerns, which may cause drive failure,
we are not able to provide any firmware upgrade for
this product. For technical support, kindly contact
your vendor."
thanks
