[Thinkpad] Thinkpads T42 and X40

Hi Thinkpadders.

I'm just now changing over from TP600x's to T42 and X40 machines and would
like advice.

On the T42, has anyone succeeded in making working Rescue and Recovery
CDs? I wasted many hours and blank CDs creating the seven disks, but they
would never install to create a factory fresh bootable system, just
something that looped through Rescue and Recovery screens. Also, are
either drive caddies or the particular screws which will be held safely by
the loops on the drive cover available anywhere? I tried to use 600
caddies but they were a poor fit and I even managed to damage the
connector pins on a drive because of the poor alignment.

On the X40, are the "mini disk drives" the same as are called 1/8" drives?
They appear to be the exact same width as "2.5" drives, but shorter with
connector pins which appear to be finer and perhaps on a smaller pitch.
Are spare caddies for these drives and also the 40GB drives themselves
available at reasonable cost? I've only seen them going for over $300 as
IBM replacement parts but I don't know whether more generic parts will
also fit (i.e. the 1.8" versus "mini" size description issue).

Thanks,

Tony
