Ooops, I just dug out my Torx T7 and it doesn't fit. It appears I need the
Torx bit with a hollowed tip (security tip). That answers that!

Yes, you need #7 Torx bit to remove the 802.11a/b cards from the laptop.
There is a metal bracket that prevents the miniPCI card from being removed.
I was able to pick up a bit (it has a regular hex back for loading into a
multi-screwdriver) for $3 at my local hardware shop.
