A very general rule of thumb that I use is if a log file is over a month
old (and assuming you've rebooted the PC within that month) then it is a
candidate to be dumped. Of course, if the log pertains to the
installation of software or Windows itself then consider keeping it.
When in doubt, open the log file and look around. You can usually tell
pretty easily if it is junk. The best candidates are repetitive logs
where there are many files with similar names (like your 'VitalAgent'
stuff listed below).
Another rule of thumb I use is that if the log file isn't huge (and your
disk isn't full) then just leave them alone. Most of the ones you
listed are well under 1MB so deleting them isn't going to save much disk
space.
Regarding updates: I rely on Windows Update
(windowsupdate.microsoft.com). It has worked well for me on all Win2K
and WinXP environments that I have to deal with. Go there and apply all
'critical' updates that it recommends unless they relate to a specific
piece of ThinkPad hardware that IBM has a better driver for.
