You may have noticed some cards have a fairly large bulge on the end
that is outside the computer itself. This usually means the card has
a decent antenna, as it has to be about that big to be effective. The
cards with just a flat end the same thinkness as the card itself have
an antenna implimented on the circuit board, and that is not good
because the losses at 2.4GHz are substantial.

Or, if you can find a card that has a flip-up antenna that would be
useful here too.

I don't have any specific suggestions for current hardware, I'm
still using D-Link 'b' devices - their DWL-650+ has a large internal
antenna and works well but it is no longer a current product...
