it isn't a private list, but the way your site works allows people to post
from lists@nabble.com without using their 'real' email address.

this makes folks unable to contact them with replies and the like, and is
(besides that) a fairly serious breach of netiquette on your part.

i'm happy for you to keep copies of the list archives, etc, but allowing
posts from your forum users without them subscribing to the list is a
no-no. we block that sort of behavior so that we don't get deluged with
spam.

the thinkpad list is roughly 15 years old and is public. about 3 years
ago the decision was made (with the consensus of the list membership) to
require people to subscribe to post.

off our listserv.
