I've used new third party batteries in my 600X. They work pretty well.
But the Lenovo batteries have a one year warranty. Call them if yours
doesn't last that long.
Sometimes you can find a deal on a new IBM-branded battery on eBay too.

------------
Some of the failings of new third party batteries are that they may use
inferior parts (such as the battery controller boards and cells).
Please visit www.batteryrefill.com for more information. Buying a
"brand new" IBM battery may also be problematic. If the "new" battery
was manufactured three years ago, it will likely not work as expected
since batteries have an effective three year shelf life. Refurbed IBM
batteries are probably the best route to go. They are using new cells,
and they are reusing the IBM controller board in the battery. New cells
can also give you up to 30% more capacity the original battery did when
it was manufactured. Do extensive research on providers that offer true
IBM remanufactured Batteries and stick with that. Try to avoid the
imitations (new or refurbed.)
Remember the old adage: "You get what you pay for."
