Noted on all of that, but one thing to point out: the same batteries in the T41 are also in the T42 and T43, so I'm guessing it might be up to a year old, but not three... it's still an active part in their product line :)
And I dunno about getting what you paid for. IBM used to charge almost twice as much as Crucial memory and I never had a problem wit Crucial. $5 for a 3rd party battery would raise an eyebrow; $120 for one from BatteryRefill versus $160 for a new one doesn't.
