That's sort of true. In reality, 30 some years back VW/Audi/Porsche was
going under. A new company president was hired (I forgot his name), but
one of his first acts was to order the use of common parts across the
model lines, and eliminate the costs of three separate parts lines.

To this day you can find part number that not only cross the lines, but a
lot of parts for current VWs, still fit 20 year old Vw's, Audi's, etc.
