I don't know how you tried to install the Trackpoint driver. You HAVE to
start by going into device manager, expanding mouse device properties to get
to the trackpoint device, and manually update the driver, mapping to the
directory created when you unzipped the IBM driver file. Typically it is
placed within C:\Drivers\Tpoint
As to your keyboard mapping, check in device manager and see if you have the
standard US keyboard layout selected.
Please perform these steps undocked, without external keyboard or mouse
attached.

Subject: [Thinkpad] two strange problems on new Thinkpad
Proud owner of new T43. (fourth Thinkpad I've owned). Its great except for
fan noise! (Which I was able to fix with the "fan control" app).
Anyway I have two strange problems that I would love help on! My IT dept is
clueless.
1) The scroll button is DOA. I mean the blue button in between the left
and right mouse buttons that I can hold to make the trackpoint scroll. I
have tried to install new versions of the drivers but without success. Any
tips on how to activate this button? Mouse properties in control panel
doesn't even mention this button, only left and right.
2) Occasionally the keyboard mappings seem to get out of wack. The Q and
A buttons become transposed, and the punctuation buttons get mixed up, but
all the other keys work. Strangely this is app specific. It might happen in
Word, but if I switch to my browser the keys still work right. Or vice
versa. Closing the application and reopening fixes the problem. I have no
foreign keymaps installed that I know of. This happens with both internal
and external keyboard, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem.
I just held shift and typed every key on the top row and got this; compare
to your keyboard:
½!"#¤%&/()=?`
WEIRD!
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Ethan
