I suggest that you use WinXP, but turn off the XP theme (use the Windows
classic theme), turn off System Restore, turn off extra services, and
consider running in a 16bit video mode. I've had good results doing this
on 600 series machines running as low as 266 mhz. Just make sure XP has
enough RAM and things will be fine. I suggest 288mb (256mb+32mb onboard)
RAM to start. Finally, make use of 'msconfig' to keep the programs that
load at bootup to a minimum (avoid frilly things like Acrobat Speed Launch,
or Winamp Agent, or MS Office Startup, etc.)

Windows XP boots faster than 2000, and when the GUI is similarly
configured, I've found performance to be better with XP (on most
hardware...I had a HP Pavilion N3250 laptop that seemed to perform better
with Win2k. Not sure why).
