Yup, I uninstalled 4.01, and then I ran the 3.81 installer again (I keep all the old installers just in case). I didn't observe any issues.*
(* but then my machine has also been somewhat screwed up by one of a series of IBM and Microsoft patches I applied that day, and I still haven't figured out which one was the culprit. Main symptom: XP Shutdown and startup now take over 2 minutes each (!) instead of under a minute. I'm not sure where to look to see what's hanging up the system every time.)
