Tis all depends on who you are trying to protect the drive *from*.
Neither an undersea voyage nor a bulk eraser will protect the data from
a data recovery agency with appropriate tools. Drilling is better, but
won't stop MI6 (at least from the undrilled parts). Some of the
software approaches are probably better than either, though I like best
the idea if driving over them in a road leveller.
