Good point, I should have thought of that before I suggested them.
For limited memory, I like XFCE4 quite a lot. I run it in the Ubuntu virtual
machines (VMware) that I use for my Linux development work.
For the curious, here is how to install a fairly bare-bones edition of XFCE4
on an Ubuntu system:
Install XFCE4:
# apt-get install x-window-system-core xfce4-terminal xfce4
Start XFCE4:
# startxfce4
Configure XFCE4 for good looking text on a ThinkPad LCD:
In Settings / Xfce 4 Settings Manager:
User Interface:
Turn on Use hinting: Full and Use sub-pixel hinting: RGB
Set Font to Bitstream Vera Sans 13
Window Manager:
Set Title Font to Bitstream Vera Sans Oblique 14
Set Title Alignment to Left (optional)
