[Thinkpad] Upgrading the optical drive and BIOS

Thinkpad x30. BIOS labelled as 2003. The solutions that I've seen for
updating the BIOS seem to assume a windows partition and I do not want
that... Has anyone updated an X30 from *nix?

Is an IBM URL for checking your optical drive. Select to download the
file (see lower down the page) and you'll have one or two pop-ups, one's
an acceptance form and the other's an applet for downloading the file.
Is flash required for this?
