[Thinkpad] blinking yellow battery - X31

my X31 has a relatively new 4460MAH battery, cycles=7. every
couple of days, the X31 goes into blinking yellow battery mode, the
worst part of which is that it decides not to try to charge the battery.
i can fix this temporarily by removing and replacing the battery while
under AC power, or if shut down. the battery maximiser says the
battery is good but suggests "reconditioning". i recycled once using the
recycle utility under the alternate boot options, it got nearly 3 hours
(which was pretty good, i figured, since it was really cranking the cpu and
disk all that time.) but a couple of days later, i get the blinking yellow
again.

any ideas?
