Precisely why I've always done the same. This is my third Thinkpad, but
first brand spankin' new one (used T20, IBM refurbed T23 in the past -
both wiped clean first).

Just to be clear... are you suggesting I use the IBM software to the get
the balance of utilities *now* before wiping? (that must be what you
meant...)
Do you recommend downloading all the drivers and utilities separately
(and installing on the clean drive separately), or using some kind of
"update manager" from IBM? Isn't one of the IBM utilities a "go connect
to the Internet and download the drivers I need" kind of thing?
I've always done the individual downloads and installs in the page (both
previous T series) - just wondering about a shortcut.
