My first thought on reading this was that such a problem might be inherent
to the system, because *someone* has to place feedback first.
But I thought a bit further about it, and asked myself whether that need
be so, after all. I've often wondered how often it occurs that the *second*
person to leave feedback for a transaction leaves a negative comment, not
because they really thought this was merited, but just to hit back at the first
person who left a negative comment for them.
If eBay considered this enough of a problem, maybe they could set up a
system whereby they wait for *both* parties to a transaction to leave feedback,
and hold the comments aside until both have arrived, then display them both
publicly at the same time. That way it would be impossible for anyone to know
what feedback they've received until they've left a comment themselves, and
hitting back out of spite would be impossible.
I suppose eBay must surely have thought of this if I can think of it, and
maybe they have some reason for not doing it. It seems a good idea, though.
(One disadvantage would be that you could not leave feedback on a sale if the
other person for any reason did not do so.)
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
