Immediately after you fixed the damaged low voltage cable of your power
adapter its connection to your son's computer appears to be intermittent.
Of the three suspect components, the cable, plug and socket, the cable is
suspect number one. Occam's Razor suggests that your cable repair was
inadequate or there was more damage in the cable than you found. If you
have a voltmeter, see whether you have a solid 16V at the plug or whether
it is intermittent as you jiggle the cable and if so cut out a larger
section of the low voltage cable and make a new splice.
If the cable is good then in my experience it's more likely that the
socket is bad than the plug. But if you're confident in the socket then
you may want to invest in a new power adapter which you can pick up on
ebay for less than $20.
