If you can see something on your laptop screen using a flashlight or even sunshine, it is the inverter/backlight. A while back I asked about the same problem on an R40 and didn't get a really good answer, so I checked out the R40 pdf manual from IBM, but even the diagrams in the manual didn't make things clear. I found a local laptop repair company and for ~$80 US, they will verify the problem and determine the part number, then for another ~$80 US + part cost, they'll fix it. If it's the inverter, I found with a lot of searches on the IBM site that you can get a replacement for ~$15 US. I also found a few laptop repair places with flat fees for lcd fixes (excluding a screen replacement) ranging from $150 US to $300 US, including parts. In any event, it's a lot less than replacing the unit if everything else is good.
