There's also the VMware Server, but those both sound like overkill for IE
testing - or would either of them have some advantage over the VMware
Player?
Microsoft also has Virtual PC 2004, but it is getting a bit long in the
tooth:

The nice thing about VMware Player is that it uses the same VM format as
VMware Workstation, so you have a nice upgrade path to a full-featured
version. Snapshots, branching, cloning - all those things make the $189 pay
for itself in short order.
