Thanks for the suggestion, but no-go. The fan is running fine at
boot-up, and it's not even getting vaguely warm before it starts playing up.

The most recent time, the screen intermittently went blank and
reappeared while it was frozen, so it certainly does sound like a board
or connection problem.

Someone referred to it as a "well-known" problem, but this is the first
time I've heard of this. Can anyone point me to details? Is it
possibly something that could be repaired with the aid of the HMM and
some hand tools?
