[Thinkpad] 600E problem

Daughter's computer's boot-time screen message:

 "Error loading operating system"

This doesn't seem promising. Comments?

As it happens I have in hand a new empty 80 gb drive. More ideas?
Can use the 600E recovery disk on it?
