Re: [Thinkpad] OT: Converting my PDA or Laptop to GPS??

The 765D is more robust Cardbus wise than the 760XL. They are not the same.
The XL likely will still have issues, the 765D works pretty well in general
with CardBus.

detailed reply. I'm wondering if my old Thinkpad 760XL is up to this? It's a
Pentium MMX 166 with 32megs of ram. An oldie, but rock steady. It has a 32
bit card slot, and an 8x cdrom. Am I asking too much to run the same system
you have? I realize I can't use Bluetooth with this, but perhaps something
similar? Would appreciate your suggestions, as I want to be up and running
for next summer when I tour in my 77 Westy camper.

current "preferred" setup is my 240 (nice size for the auto) with a
bluetooth card and a bluetooth wireless GPS. The wireless GPS is smaller
than a package of cigarettes, more like a book of matches, and has been
outstanding. I'm a confirmed Street Atlas devotee; although I don't use the
current versions. I'm partial to SA version 9 which was the last version
before they radically changed the GUI. I've tried SA 2003, 2006, and most
recently SA 2007. These "newer" versions have more voice capabilities but
the interface leaves me befuddled. I've also used Street and Trips from M$;
it has superior graphics vis-avis the maps, but the GPS tracking isn't on
par with SA (in SA the GPS symbol is an arrow wich turns in the direction of
travel; in S&T it is an icon that doesn't point in the direction you're
traveling).

later a wired USB GPS. Worked fine, but one more wire besides the DC power
cord was more than my navigator could handle.

remember; DeLorme Street Atlas sells for about $45.00 (Fry's Electronis
recently had SA with GPS for $69.95, after rebate).
