Problem Background:
Last week the hard drive in my TP 390E failed during boot up. Booting from a floppy doesn't give any access and as far as I can tell the BIOS doesn't recognise its presence (there is an '!' by the device when selecting it in the boot sequence). When powered up it sounds as though it is repeatedly trying to perform a read operation.
Questions:
(1) Is there anything to be done with the drive? Any test that I should try before consigning it to, erm, an appropriate recycling facility?
(2) The drive is a 4.32 GB Travelstar (DKLA-24320). I would like to replace it with something slightly larger to squeeze a bit more life out of the laptop. What are the options? Could anyone share their upgrade experience in this area with me.
(3) Does anyone have any thoughts on buying a 'refurbished' hard drive?
(4) Could anyone recommend a UK supplier?
Cheers,
Ben
