I've never seen any indication of SMART capability during boot up,
I must confess. No message ever comes up to say it's enabled for
example. However, just today I noticed this in some online
literature describing the 390E:
"Disk controller: EIDE / PCI 2.1 / one internal disk / disk can be
removed to upgrade by customer / supports two internal disks/ 13ms
read / 14ms write / S.M.A.R.T."
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/twbook.pdf
(page 36)
And there's mention of it as a feature in this publicity for the
4.3GB Travelstar (DKLA-24320):
I wondered if it had been disabled for some reason.

It was a DeathStar.
That is the usual sudden death.
