Hello -

I second the Software Installer. It's part of the ThinkVantage utilities,
which I regard as great. There's also a variant of the Software Installer
named System Update (it might be its successor). However, I've learned that
some updates are only gotten through the Installer. I use both. These
utilities also assist in rescue and recovery. You can boot into them
directly by (if you have it) pressing the blue ThinkVantage button at
start-up.
