Please disregard my last message. If you believe the hard disk drive is
failing (and, from re-reading the message thread, it may very well be)
then I would suggest a data recovery program.

Convar's PC Inspector is one program which I have often seen recommended.
It is, however, supposed to be slow.

I personally have had good experiences using Runtime Software's GetDataBack
line of data recovery programs. They are relatively inexpensive compared to
other programs in the category (about $150 for both the FAT and NTFS versions,
if I recall correctly) and seem to work well.
