[Thinkpad] Stand By

Hello. My understanding is, that the 'stand-by' selection is used when
moving the laptop so not to damage the hard drive. For whatever it's used,
it appears my doesn't work. I put into Stand-By, then I press Fn. The end
product is my desktop image and nothing else. Am I doing something wrong?
I'm running XP.
