Well, I took the machine apart (I always have to wonder if the marketing
folks realize what a great job the engineers did on these machines --
they're SO easy to work with!) and cleaned the vanes on the fan. Then I
fired it up with the keyboard out and the fan spun and all was quiet, so I
congratulated myself and put it back together.
That lasted a half hour or so; now the noise is back. It's very mechanical,
and is sometimes constant, sometimes "revs" like an engine -- rrr, rrr, rrr.
I pulled the keyboard with it running, and it's definitely the fan: if I
touch it lightly with my fingernail, the noise stops.
What I did not do was lubricate the fan at all, as I couldn't see where to
do so -- the hub a largish plastic thingy that covers the actual spindle.
Suggestions?
