IDE stands for Integrated Drive Electronics--a ridiculously general (and
only incidentally relevant) name that has mostly given way to the more
appropriate ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment). PATA is just a more
specific name for ATA, to distinguish it from SATA. So the simple
practical answer (at least in terms of this drive is an IDE|ATA|PATA
drive) is that the 3 terms mean the same thing.
I'd like to say that the other adornments are flexible (which they
usually are in the desktop domain). BUT, i've found (much to my
annoyance) that, amongst older lappy drives, there are at least 3
versions of the interface, which are flatly incompatible. (For example:
i cannot use my USB adaptor with any of my ancient sub-gigabyte
drives.) And--since my most recent lappies are a pair of 1999
ThinkPads--i don't know if the industry standards defecators have
extruded yet another one; so i'm reluctant to advise.
