Scott,
You can make an image at any point you see fit and save as many as you want.
In my mind what makes the "Acronis True Image" approach more attractive than
a clean install is to set up your system with updates and software so it is
ready to go and then make an image. If you expand or update your software
then make a new image or do an incremental backup. Now if you ever need to
restore you will be back to where you left off. This is much better than
spending days re-installing and updating. Personally I don't bother with
incremental system backups, I just make a new image from time to time and
save the last two. Start it and go to bed. I usually do a cleanup and a
defrag before making an image. This has always worked for me. I also store a
backup of my data on an external disk or three.. I do this manually and my
data is available for use on any of my computers.
