So if I first restore a saved image to a new blank drive, and that doesn't
then boot -- I should next use Thinkpad recovery disks to start a recovery
(at least up through its disk format) and then abort the recovery, and then
restore the image -- is that about right?

Thanks -- I had just expected that a restore would "just work" to a new
blank drive.
