FWIW, I've been running Vista on my T60p since one of the later betas but I also don't use the restore discs for OS installs and I don't use a lot of the Lenovo software like Access Connections and the like. I've been burned by AC before and there's too much crap in the restore versions of the OS for me to like it.
Having said that, it's performed well on my hardware and I've got no real complaints with the OS as a whole. I think the reason why people tend to not like it is because of certain expectations... I've heard people complain that it's too much like XP and not enough like XP. They're both right, in a way: it's not XP+1 but it's also not entirely (or else nothing would be backwards compatible). It all depends on what you expect of it.
Also, a lot of compatibility issues come from bad coding in the third party applications but Vista takes the blame for it. Microsoft has told people for years that writing stuff to C:\ is a bad programming practice for Windows - if a developer has ignored that for years it would certain have issues.
For me, I see it as a new OS with all of the challenges a new OS bring - the same thing happens between . releases of OSX but people in the Apple camp rarely dwell on it.
JM2C of course :)
