The squealing is a feedback loop. The microphone is picking up ambient
noise (such as the fan), and the speakers are playing what the mic picks
up. That is subsequently being picked up by the mic, and a loop is
born. The behavior you are witnessing is standard. Happens on every
machine I've ever owned. Microphone needs to be muted in the playback
sound panel. This should not impact sound recording applications like
Audacity, or Windows Media Encoder.
