If you have a Vista factory preload, you don't have to worry about any of
this. Just use the activation backup and recovery tool to back up your
activation information from the preload and restore it onto your fresh
install.
For example, I wanted to install 64-bit Vista on my X61 Tablet instead of
the 32-bit Vista that came with it. I used the activation tool to copy the
activation information from the factory preload to my clean 64-bit
installation.
No WPA hassles this way! I didn't have to activate the 64-bit install, and
the System control panel has those golden words, "Windows is activated."
