I own both a ThinkPad 770z and a A31p.
Both machines had a number of common attributes:
-"top of the line" for the corporate market
- expensive price (>$4500)
- barely portable (> 7.5 lbs)
- large, high quality screens (14.1" and 15")
- extra video memory (4mb and 64mb)
- very good build quality
- very good keyboards
I bought both machines used but within the warranty period.
- the 770z was 15 months old and cost about $1200
- the A31P was 16 months old and cost about $1050
My 770z functions as my home file and print server. The only HW component
that was replaced was the original HD. The memory was upgraded to 512mb.
The A31p was the logical successor to the 770z and it is my current home,
"desktop machine. I use the A31p with a full docking station an it gives me
tremendous flexibility. I renewed my IBM EzServ warranty last month and it
is now entering year six of a productive useful life. The original HD was
upgrade to a 7200rpm Hitachi drive. There has been one EzServ service call
to replace the video daughter card which required a replacement mother board
( a common problem with the A30p/31p series).
I have purchased a T42p as the successor to the A31p, The T42p has the UXGA
"flexview" screen. The T42p has much better battery life than the A31p but
it does NOT have the 3 spindle design of the A31p. The T42p was
approximately 24 months old when purchased and it cost $850.

Subject: Re: [Thinkpad] Your ThinkPad history (770 series)
One computer I considered in the past was the 770 series. I thought it
had quite a bit of features - but by the time I was considering
purchacing it, the 600 series was similarly priced (in the used market)
and the T20 was even more so afordable. I ended up with my T23 after
that series of transactions were complete - skipping the 770 and the 600
series al-together. My question is this, was the 770 a good computer?
Even in the used market the 770 was expensive for the features you got -
at the time. Going with the 600 would have ment a reduction of a few
features, but the computing power of the 600 series and especially th
T2x series made the purchase of the 770 not a good idea - at the time I
was considering it.
I was very happy with the T23 - but never being able to experience it,
was the 770 a good compter?
George
