I also have one of the -8AU 770Zs with the SXGA display and it is a
magnificent machine, to the point that it took years for one of my daughters
to finally grow tired of it and send it home.
My Thinkpad history began with a 750C back in around '95 IIRC, a machine
that originally was introduced in '93 for $ 7,245. This was quickly followed
by several 755 series machines, including my first Pentium machine a 755CX,
and culminating in a 755CD that's now part of Bill M's Thinkpad Museum.
These were supplanted by several 760 series machines, ending with my much
loved 760XL that served my 86YO mother for years as her primary computer.
It must have been in '99 that I got my first 600 and quickly fell deeply in
love with its overall (relatively) diminutive size, build quality and form
factor. This was followed by a veritable flood of 600 series machines both
for my own family's use as well as more than a hundred machines sold to
various journalist and wordsmith friends. My "ultimate" 600X, upgraded to an
850MHz PIII, 576MB RAM and a 7K60 HD traveled around the world with me for
several years and was the model for many upgraded machines I built for a
small group of discerning owners over the years. My own 600X was my daily
driver for years and years until it was finally retired in favor of a T40.
No machines have ever had a better keyboard than the 600 series!
I've had every type of T2X series machine at one time or another, and each
of my children was sent off to college with one as an "upgrade" from the 600
series machine they made do with in high school. Keeping the kids, and their
spouses, up to date with Thinkpads over the years has resulted in my having
quite a collection of T2X and T30 machines that I've got to clean up and get
rid of soon.
The introduction of the T40 series resulted in my quickly adopting it as my
daily driver and retiring my much loved 600X. I soon had to upgrade everyone
in the family to T4X machines and ultimately wound up with a couple of 14"
T41Ps as my go-to machines. The acquisition of a 15" UXGA T60P and a
widescreen T61 haven't quite retired my T41P yet.
I long ago retired my desktop system with a docked 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, A31P, a
true workhorse machine that will continue to serve my home network needs for
years to come.
The purchase of an X31 awhile ago on a whim has lead to my keeping one
constantly to hand as a short distance travel machine. I became so enamored
of its small size, excellent Wi-Fi reception and overall ruggedness that I
guess I praised it too much to my son who quickly liberated it to use as his
travel machine as he flies hither and yon as a commercial pilot. The
replacement X31s I've obtained since then have all gone out the door to
pilot associates of my son.
I've got some "historic" machines around that I keep for sentimental reasons
only, such as several 701C machines, a few 755s, my left-handed Transnote,
my always faithful 600X, etc., etc. Why? I have no idea!
I must be the only one on the list that hasn't purchased a machine from
Bruce over the years, maybe he'll have an X60 for me soon and I'll be able
to correct that omission.
Regards,
James
