Used 600X or Used T-23 or Used T-41are better choices than most cheap
units.. Or you might consider a Toshiba Satellite or a Gateway which we find
to be more reliable builds.
The least expensive laptops, whether Dell, Compaq, HP, Sony, Acer... have
problems with early failing screens or inverters, bad hinges and sockets, or
warranties. There is a compromise everytime a low priced computer is
released. You must decide whether you can afford the eventual cost of that
compromise.
Adding a new battery to a used, well cared for Thinkpad, still seems like
the wiser choice to me. Especially when combined with a good back, or a
thermo unit to protect it from heat in a vehicle.
