[Thinkpad] Ultrabay hard disk not working in T23

Should the ultrabay in the T23 support a second hard disk?
I've tried with 2 hard disks, both of which work perfectly
in a T43 (with the thinner ultrabay).
But both Windows XP and Fedora Linux hang
when I boot with the ultrabay hard disk in.
Also a CD drive works fine in the T23.

Do I have a faulty ultrabay hard disk adaptor?
Or is there some problem using a 2nd hard disk
in a T23?
