I don't know, it is a pretty realistic expectation for Solaris. We
regularly upgrade Solaris 8 servers to Solaris 10 and just re-mount the
data partition (where all the apps and their settings are stored) and
software starts up and works 100% like it did on 8 without any tweaks.
Complex stuff like out-of-the-box and custom developed Java apps,
WebLogic Server, SiteMinder, Opnet, TeamQuest, Apache, etc. It's called
binary compatibility, and Sun does it well.

Win XP has such a huge installed base and so much software out there for
it that it's unrealistic for Microsoft or anyone to think that the
'next' OS would NOT be almost completely compatible with XP. Drivers?
Maybe that's a different story, but not out of the question. The
software itself? There's no excuse for it not to work if it was written
properly in XP.
