I'll jump in just this once and say that Bruce's experience matches a LOT of
people I know who (foolishly) lept onto Vista, both as upgrades and new
machines. Some software I wrote long long ago that recompiled & ran on
W95/98, Win2k/XP has some problems on Vista; I don't know if the folks
who used it will decide to spend resources to see why this is, but I know
they backported their 7 machines to XP to once again do useful things,
such were their overall experiences.
When you add the fact that XP's SP3 is going to have most (some? all?)
of the security protections from Vista rolled back to XP, I really don't
see any compelling reason to go to Vista. As someone said, Vista might
become better with time but right now I just can't see a reason to go to
it, and given that Lenovo, Dell and other OEMS have XP upgrade policies
in effect, it would seem that consumers have spoken, and the noises that
MS has made about EOL for XP may turn out to be just noise. I believe EOL
for XP is 2014(?). Some folks I know are starting to migrate towards Linux
and other open source OS's, so it wouldn't surprise me that Vista turns out
to be the largest turkey ever created by MS.
