Basic Rules for Passwords:
1. Machines are bought password free.
2. If machine has a password, you need to know it.
3. Best way of cracking a password is entering it.
4. If you do not know the password:
a. You bought the machine w/ a password -> your screwed - contact seller for resolution.
b. You stole the machine -> thus the password work and the machine is worthless w/o proper owner.
This is pretty much the reason for a password.
c. You set the password and since then forgot it - you are screwed.
5. ThinkPad Mailing List is not a source for password removal information.
a. If there was a easy way of removing a password from a ThinkPad, there would not be a ThinkPad Mailing List. Think about it.
6. People have made claims on being able to remove passwords.
a. Very expensive!
b. Idea is the DATA on the ThinkPad is more valuable then the machine and is the core reason for extracting the password.
c. People who steal computers should not be able to profit from cheap password removal schemes.
Summary - if you put a password on your machine, somehow use a method of recovering it. A low cost method only needs a pencil and paper. WRITE THE PASSWORD DOWN, and then secure the location of the piece of paper!

I think this has been discussed before, if it is an IBM pre-load there is no
admin password of that type that can be used.
