[Thinkpad] T41p and problems with Dell 24" WS monitor

I have a Dell 24" WS monitor that's 2-3 years old. I think it's the
2405 model though I'm not positive.

It used to work really well with my T41p (after updating the video
drivers). Now I'm having some problems. I wasn't sure if it was the
computer or the display, but my recent temporary acquisition of an HP
nc6220 (?) notebook has allowed me to test. Everything's better with
the HP so I'm wondering what I can do to make it better with the T41p.

First, at 1900x1200 (?) (display's native resolution), it sometimes
comes up from snoozing with blurry jaggy letters. It's done that as
long as I can remember and usually I could fix it by changing
resolutions, then back to 1900x. Recently it's taken more and more
tries to fix it.

The other problem is perhaps more serious. At 1900x, the right-hand
part of the screen is missing. Just about half an inch I'd guess,
essentially the part of the system tray that holds the digital clock
(Windows XP). At 1600x1200 (non-WS) the display is stretched but
nothing's missing and it's relatively sharp (compared to 1900x).

With the HP, I have many fewer display options (I think I got the
1024x768 internal unit). I can choose internal-only, external-only,
and dual-display. As far as I can tell, the external-only mode just
goes right to native resolution of 1900x. There may be other options
but I haven't seen them. However, this external-only setting is
perfectly positioned on the screen and text is as sharp as I could
possibly want.

Is there anything I can tweak on the T41p to make it look better, and
all there?

Thanks!
