Jeffrey,
before you spend on a "cheap" buy for a digicam ... you want to think
through what you want to do with it. For example, do you need a pocket
camera?
Consider capabilities you need: Fine detail (8-10MP max .. high pixel
count means more noisy image) ... for document copying, for cropping
overhead; Video capability .. with zoom; The short end of the ZOOM ...
the shorter the more useful; Lens performance; Shutter delay is
important for moving targets (e.g. childrren); Shake reduction ..
in-lens or imager shift (but not "electronic") .... and there are
several other considerations including how much manual control you
want/need.
Being a shutterbug from my teens, and having had Zeiss glass since the
'60s my initial digital experience was more curiosity than commitment;
over the past 10 I have acquired several (my wife thinks too many)
digicams ... from very iffy earlier capabilities to astounding more
current versions .. and via Moore's Law progressively more camera for
less money. Just ordered a Panasonic DMC-TZ5 for my wife's upcoming
visit with her family in Europe. It is an astounding pocket camera
incorporating significant advances on several fronts ... but more money
than that obsolete Nikon that caught your eye.
