On a 600E or 600X, it's easy to download pics using USB and a
DOS batch file. Provided that the camera supports recognition
as a drive, you can "install" your camera with next to zero
overhead--by not using the manufacturer's installation CD. You
can also transfer images to anybody's laptop. That worked for
us with a Kodak DC-215, a Sony DCR TRV730, and an Olympus
Stylus 300. However, on our most recent purchase, the Canon
A720, under Win2K, the camera was not recognized as a drive, it
was more of a TWAIN device or something. Consequently, we had
to load the bloatware software. It works, although in the time
it takes merely for the software to load, I would already have
transferred a dozen pics with DOS batch files.
For most list members this is a minor issue, but Dr. Race has a
particular history of needing to conserve disk space.
Incidentally, Ed apologized for sending our private email
correspondence (which he initiated) to the list. It was not
purposeful, it was in the nature of a misconfiguration.
Ironically, that refutes his point. Wisdom does not
necessarily translate into technical precision in an unrelated
field.
