The airport security will usually want to have it placed in an open "laptop"
tub where they can inspect it remotely by camera and by weight.
There is a good chance you will be asked to open the laptop and turn it on.
I get stopped and asked this three out of ten times in some airports... like
New York, Newark, LA, Tucson, Phoenix, Seattle... Houston, Miami... New
Orleans...
The will want to be sure it is a computer only, and does not have its
compartments filled with explosive devices... They also use a "profile" so
if you have a certain look, or your ticket was purchased in a certain way,
or location, they will inspect closely... especially if you look like you
are from Long Island.
I usually take my hard drive out, as well.
I recommend encasing the computer, camera, and such items in a sealed case
and not taking them through the check-in line... Do not mark the box as
Computers. Let the ticket agent tell you what to do. Tell them you must
have the boxe upon arrival so it is not shipped as luggage.
There are a great number of good advice sites online... The rules change
all the time, and by airport.
