FYI, it turns out that my colleague *did* still have a hardware password on the drive - another case where "Are you sure? Are you really sure? Are you really, really sure?" apparently wasn't enough.
After removing the password, the drive was recognized but still not accessible by Windows on the T6x. Some minor tweaking with Partition Magic (converting the primary partition to an extended) resolved that and it's now working fine.
