For those interested, I can report that with the assistance of the
Service Manual for the OB500 (the link to which was posted on this
list; check the archive) I was able to take care of this myself.  It
was just the display cable developing a flaky connection.

As a former production / R&D worker, I can also report that the
mechanical design of the OB is very robust and high quality,
i.e. repairable instead of disposable.  In particular, the cable from
the display connector to the LCD ass'y (a usual weak spot) has a nice
strain relief setup.
