Hi,
I bought a used Omnibook 500 about 2 years ago. I tried to replace the CD
player from the docking station with a CD-R which was lying around waiting
to be used.
I experienced the same problems, the CD-R not detected bij the BIOS, and
as a consequence not being able to boot from it. It did however appear in
windows and I was able to play music CDs with it standalone.
Replacing the CD-R with the original CD player gave the same result. No CD
drive detected in the BIOS anymore.
On the CD drive is an adapter bracket that connects the standard CD drive
connector to the connector of the docking station. On top of this adapter
pcb is a plastic cover plate. It runs along the side of the CD drive
towards the from and is U shaped. Without the coverplate (which
unfortunately also is used to centre the CD drive in the slot and fix it
in the docking station) the CD drive goes a little bit futher into the
docking station.
After a reset of the dockingstation (small pushbutton at bottomside) the
BIOS detected the drives without any problems. Just the reset did not do
the trick.
I tried to realign the dockingstation pcb inside the docking station but
was never able to reposition it to get the CD-R being detected with the
plastic cover plate on it.
I ended up with the original CD player (detected by the BIOS and being
able to boot from it) and an external SCSI PCMCIA CD-R.
Sometimes (only after undocking and docking the OB500) the CD player is
not detected by the BIOS. Till now a reset of the docking station and a
re-insertion of the CD drive restores the detection of the CD drive by
the BIOS.
It looks like the mating of the CD drive to the dockingstations CD drive
connector is not 100% reliable, locking up the controller inside, however
I was not able to correct it.
Hope this information is of any help
Rens

[OmniBook] omnibook 500 - docking station - cdrom
Classification
hi all,
as some of you might know, my omnibook 500 was given by a friend, without
the dcking station, recently, i bought the docking station, along with the
cdrom for it. upon receiving my package, i think i failed to get the cdrom
to appear in winxp, nor boot from cdrom.
however, the cdplayer (no notebook) seems to be working perfectly, it
playes audio cd flawlessly. i've set various settings in the bios, doesnt
seems to work,
1) is there a way to know if my notebook is connected to the docking
station correctly
2) how would i remedy my problem, i was considering reinstalling winxp (or
winME, winxp seems a little slow)
